I think what many of us love about academia is the idea of freedom behind it.

We romanticize the endless possibilities of deepening our knowledge — something many of us would do for free anyway.

The problem is that institutions know this.

And over time, that love can become a lever: constant pressure, constant comparison, and the feeling of never being quite “up to standard”.

Sometimes I wonder who built this machine of standards in the first place.

It would be nice if we could rewrite academia around more humane standards — ones that enrich people rather than drain them to the bone.

In the meantime, I really wish you the best with your career and life.

Absolutely relatable. I finished ( engineering PhD), at great cost to self. No longer at ease or the same.
